What is MC Number?
MC number (formerly known as ICC) is specifically designed to identify a carrier or company that:
- Transporting regulated items from another owner or arranging their transportation (for a fee or other compensation, in interstate commerce)
- Carries passengers in interstate commerce (for a fee or other compensation, although direct or indirect compensation)
For an operator to work in interstate traffic, it must have both an MC number and a USDOT number.
Along with the above numbers, there may be other authority numbers that you need to get in order to work legally. Operating authorities such as MX and FF may also be necessary for you. This may depend on what operations you perform and on the specific cargo that you are transporting.
IS AN MC NUMBER REQUIRED?
It is important that you choose the correct type of authority that meets the needs of your business. The correct authority will help ensure that your business operates legally and get the right type of insurance.
The exception is that if you are:
- private carrier (you transport only your cargo)
- hired carrier transporting only exempted goods (cargo that is not regulated by federal law)
- operating in the federal “commercial zone” that go beyond the rules of interstate authority.
Average Time to Receive MC Number
The application process is simple. You can even apply for both the USDOT number and the MC number at the same time. If you already have a USDOT number and you just need an MC number, we will take care of this for you! It takes no more than an hour! If you do not have a PIN for an account for a USDOT number, we can get the MC number within a few days.
To process your MC number, you must have your BOC-3 and insurance at FMCSA. Once you have received your MC number, you should immediately contact your insurance company. As soon as the FMSCA publishes the announcement of your intention to register, you will have 90 days to provide this information. Once this is done, you will receive your docket number and date of publication.
We will help with everything you need! After your MC number has gone through the FMCSA process, it will take about 2-3 weeks.
