What is Kentucky Weight Distance Permit?

The Kentucky Weight Distance Tax permit (KYU) is a tax license issued for all carriers traveling on Kentucky roadways with a combined license weight greater than 59,999 pounds. The tax rate is $0.0285 cents per mile. It is a requirement to obtain a one-time temporary KYU Permit per truck in​ the case you are not making regular trips through the state of Kentucky or file the Kentucky Weight Distance with our experienced agents.  Both of these can be obtained by contacting DOT Filing at 818-568-0644. It is important to note that the KYU mandates that carriers file for each quarter regardless of if they have traveled to Kentucky for that period.

Exceptions: Farm plated vehicles are exempt from paying the KYU tax.

 

When do I need to file my tax returns?

 

  • April1-April 30 (for the quarter January 1 through March 31)
  • July1-July 31 (for the quarter April 1 through June 30)
  • October1-October 31 (for the quarter July 1 through September 30)
  • January1-January 31 (for the period October 1 through December 31)

 

KYU Number

KYU Numbers are issued immediately upon completion of the KYU Application. Before obtaining your KYU number, there are a number of requirements that you must meet. One of them is, that you must register as an Interstate carrier via your USDOT number. Then, you must have an “active” MC number if you are authorized for-hire and finally you must have obtained an UCR (Unified Carrier Registration) for your company. Once you receive the KYU number, the KYU taxes must file quarterly and in a timely manner in order to keep your authorization active.
