CA Number (California DOT Number)
The California Department of Transportation Number (CA DOT) is a unique number assigned by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Motor carriers who operate within the state lines of California must have a California DOT Number. You can be an in-state or out-of-state carrier.
In-State Carriers: Operate commercial vehicles within the state lines of California. Carriers must obtain a Motor Carrier Permit, a CA number, and started from September 2016 a US DOT number as well.
Out of State Carriers: Some Out-of-state carriers must obtain a Motor Carrier Permit and a CA DOT number in addition to the USDOT number to cross California state lines.
CA DOT number’s owner must display the CA DOT on both sides of each vehicle (according to the California Vehicle Code (CVC) Section 34507.5).
